|FISHERIES||Pacific Halibut by Hook and Line Salmon Troll Area F - North Coast / Haida Gwaii Salmon Troll Area G - West Coast Vancouver Island|
Victor Amos has owned many vessels in his lifetime. He presently owns the 46 ft longliner, “Em-Ali” which fishes Halibut and Black Cod as well as Pacific Ocean caught salmon and Spot Prawns.
Victor has been active in community affairs of his First Nation and an advocate for other First Nation fishermen. His vessel is equipped with modern refrigeration systems and quality control systems and can either carry chilled flake ice for the emerging fresh market or flash freezing for high quality export of salmon and prawns.
Victor continues to advocate for the highest quality product caught slowly and carefully in sustainable fisheries similar to those of his father and grandfather who taught him their knowledge.
Hesquiaht First Nation
Hesquiaht First Nation is a Nuu-chah-nulth government on the West Coast of Vancouver Island and a member of the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council.
Hesquiaht people have sustainably lived off their ocean and rivers for thousands of years and were renowned as skilled sealers, whalers, and Halibut fishermen. The tradition carries on today and their fish are harvested one at a time.
Hesquiaht fishermen have been trained from youth as fishing people to take great care of their ocean food and take special attention with quality and handling and avoiding waste.
With a wealth of ocean resources, Hesquiaht looks to this resource as their “garden”. With sustainable practices and traditional knowledge, this “garden” will flourish forever.
