Oceans + Tech panel at SXSW Eco in Austin, Oct. 9

Oceans + Tech panel at SXSW Eco in Austin, Oct. 9

Off-shore wind power. Million-dollar views. New Panamax ships. Blue-label fish. We are asking more and more of the coast and the ocean. By 2025, some six billion people will live within 50 miles of the sea. How can we negotiate the competing needs of billions, while protecting ocean health?  Better technology tools for smarter, faster, more inclusive decisions.

From traceability tools that allow consumers to connect with producers and iPad apps that allow fisherman to log their catch at sea and improve fisheries management, emerging smart technology can bridge competing ocean interests and build collaborative solutions with everyone from fishing communities to energy developers to government agencies around the world. Charles Steinback of Ecotrust, Eric Enno Tamm from ThisFish/Ecotrust Canada and Jay Odell of The Nature Conservancy will talk about how new technologies are transforming fishing, seafood consumption and ocean management.
