Community supported fishery connects seafood lovers to fishermen

This eight-minute documentary examines Off The Hook, a Community Supported Fishery program managed by the Ecology Action Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Captain Beau Gillis of Freeport, Nova Scotia, uses baited hooks, a bottom longline and a 32-foot boat to catch fish for subscribers who really appreciate fresh fish and a chance to meet their fish harvester. Capt. Gillis also uses ThisFish to allow his customers to trace their catch.

"We didn't really realize it, but we actually like meeting the people who eat our fish," Capt. Gillis says. "We weren't too keen on it in the beginning. We thought the customer-fisherman relationship wasn't all that attractive, but now it's the favourite part of what we do -- selling our fish to customers who enjoy it. We never had the luxury before."
