Smooth Nylon Shrimp
The deepwater caridean shrimp, also known as smooth nylon shrimp, occurs throughout the tropical Pacific Ocean, whre it is found in benthic deepwater habitats. They have a distinctive reddish brown colour and white spots on their tail. They live in rocky seafloor habitat. Turning bright pink when cooked, these prawns are prized for their distinctive sweet flavour and firm texture.
Females mature at 40 mm and can be found carrying eggs year round; however, the main reproductive season is from August to February, with over 50% of females carrying eggs from October to January. Mature shrimp may undergo a depth related seasonal migration in synchrony with breeding.
